Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We did quite a bit of research about finding a good insurance for our baby French Bulldog, figuring if we didn’t get it something was bound to happen and if we did then we would be covered. Beyond glad we chose Healthy Paws as our pup took a tumble at doggy daycare and fractured his elbow about a week ago and racked up huge vet bills. We submitted the claims via the Healthy Paws app and were reimbursed within the week! We couldn’t be happier with the quick turnaround, customer support when we called with questions and the follow up of the team. Most importantly, they saved us over $4,000 in out of pocket expenses. I have been a customer of Healthy Paws for over 5 years now. I've had two of my pets covered with Healthy Paws within that time. I've never experienced huge increases in premiums with my first pet's insurance. She was covered for nearly 4 years, but that pet has since passed. Currently, I only have one pet covered since Jan 2016 with a premium of $39.72/month. After one year it increased slightly to $43.70/month, which is reasonable. However, the next year it jumped to $54.18/month, and they just raised it again to $67.81/month this year. These are substantial increases, which they justify as increased cost of vet care. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase and realize this increase was larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have seen an increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. Rest assured, we never penalize a client with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. We hope you and your dog stay well!

I just want to say that I could not be more pleased with Healthy Paws and how easy it to file claims and receive reimbursements. Our German Shepherd was diagnosed with a potentially life threatening fungal infection and required thousands of dollars worth of treatment and medications. I am not in great financial shape right now so to be able to focus on my dog and not have to worry much about the financial side of treatment is such a blessing. Getting Healthy Paws insurance was a great decision and I would never own a pet again without this insurance. I have been telling my friends and family about Healthy Paws and highly recommending getting pet insurance through them.

Our relationship with Healthy Paws has been beneficial, stress free, and delightful since Day 1. Submitting our cats' veterinary invoices is a quick and easy process via iPad, cell phone, laptop, or desktop and scanner. The reimbursement checks seem to arrive before we've powered down our devices and Healthy Paws is very quick to communicate the status of our claim so we always know what's up.

Signing up with Healthy Paws was the best decision we could have made for our pup who unfortunately has had a lot of health issues including a recent, unexpected surgery. In each case, Healthy Paws has covered these expenses and lived up to their promise. It’s so easy to use their app to submit claims. They process the claims quickly and will submit your reimbursement directly to your bank account if you choose. I have had Healthypaws on my dogs since I adopted them as puppies. Having this coverage is something you hope you NEVER have to use but when you need it, having it can mean that you can remove financial concerns as a factor in if your loved one lives or dies. One of my pups became very ill and if it wasn't for Healthypaws I am not sure if I would have been able to remove the financial burden from decisions about care. I am forever grateful to Healthypaws for that.

This is what insurance should be. I can't say enough how grateful I am that my best friend recommended healthypaws to me and I signed my dog up. My dog is my child and a very important part of my family. She needed two surgeries in one year and healthypaws alleviated financial stress without adding any stress. My experience was as good as I could’ve hoped for under the conditions. I lost my fabulous two-year-old border collie pup to a freak internal tear. I would have paid anything to have her recover, but to face her loss followed by the $6000 vet bill would have been intolerable. Healthy Paws was fast, efficient and the gal who handled my claim was gentle, supportive and sympathetic. The check arrived amazingly fast. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I can only give them my best recommendation.

When I had to leave my pup Piglet at the vet hospital for over three days while they ran tests to try and figure out why she wasn't eating and regurgitating putrid brown liquid, it was one of the most stressful situations I have been in. The only thing worse than the bill I was racking up was the fact that they didnt know what was wrong with her. I work for a non-profit and live to paycheck to paycheck.
