Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I want to highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for the exceptional service they have provided me. Earlier this week, I submitted two claims in relation to a rather expensive leg surgery my Golden Retriever recently underwent. Unfortunately, he had complications and ended up in the emergency room a couple days later. In just a matter of a few hours following my claim submission, Healthy Paws had reviewed and approved both claims. Overall outstanding pet insurance and service! Our dog needed eye surgery for melanocytoma/melanoma. The whole procedure including pre-checks came close to 4,000 dollars... Healthypaws approved with no questions asked within a few days - remarkable! We are so grateful for the speedy review and the reimbursement of the costs as per contract. Super friendly service on the phone, and they even checked by email afterwards how things were going. It's a huge relief for pet ‘parents’ to have such a great insurance and not having to think about something horrible. Highly recommended.

I had Trupanion for the first 2 months after bringing Sadie home from the shelter. After I heard about Healthy Paws and compared the two as well as a few others, I decided to go with Healthy Paws and I am so glad I did. Their rates are good, their service is faboulous. Processing claims is a breeze and reimbursement time is extremely quick. The few times I had to speak to a representative, they were very compassionate and caring. My dog just had surgery for a benign tumor on her paw, I received an email from several employees asking how she was progressing in her recovery. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

When looking for health insurance for my two new puppies I looked at all the options. When I contacted Healthy Paws with some questions they were very helpful and answered all my questions. I liked the ease of the signup process and the usability of their phone app. It was not until a year later that I needed to actually use the insurance and when that time came I was pleased to find that the upload process and claim process was so easy. I uploaded the records that I received from my Vet and then snapped a picture of the bills and in a week Healthy Paws had reviewed all the records and reimbursed me for the covered procedure. My wife and I were recently Healthy Paws customers until we suddenly lost our mastiff. Losing our dog was a significant tragedy and while that can't be changed, the stress of that could have been so much worse. She had significant hospital bills which were terrifying to rack up. On multiple occasions, we have had to file large claims and each time, they were reimbursed without argument. We cannot tell you how grateful we are for that. Additionally, a couple of weeks after our loss, we received a card signed by the team at Healthy Paws. It was very touching. I can't say enough positive things about Healthy Paws. I first purchased insurance when my boy Teddy was a puppy, and I'm thankful every day that I did. I carry the maximum level of insurance (90% coverage after a $200 annual deductible) on Teddy and it's worth every penny. The first year of Teddy's life we were at the vet every 2 weeks for chronic skin issues, & more than one emergency visit when he's ingested things that he shouldn't have. We have spent thousands of dollars over the last couple years on procedures, medications, and skin related medical care and the majority of that money spent has been refunded by Healthy Paws (90% to be exact!). This company needs to fix its customer service badly. The website freezes your computer when you try to do a simple task like changing a credit card number. And the phone number for customer service is poorly staffed with unacceptable wait times.
