Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

If you want to speak with your home warranty company this is not the company you want to be with! Hold times are always over an hour! Even their chat line simply refers you to the telephone number ... and that require another hour or more of wait time. Once you get someone or report a "covered" appliance they are pretty good at getting a contractor to come make the repair although they (AHS) has to order the part and send it to the contractor even though one may be available locally that the contractor could get and speed up the repair. Replacement parts are generally at a lower quality than the original. once the repair is assigned I would give the company 4 stars. For being able to... Read More

Terrible company. 1. I called for a dryer check. I paid my 75 bucks. An agent came and told me I have to buy fuse and thermometer which he has to order and come back to fox it for which I have to pay 209 bucks. AHS said they don't cover because 'the machine broke because of yr fault' It is outrageous. I paid for the service and this is what I get. Remember I pay my monthly bills too. 2. I called for AC check. I again paid 75 bucks for AHS. An sgent called me and said he would come on July 20th. I was waiting all day long and I have a camera and I know who exactly comes to my home. A few days later they left a voice message informing me they couldn't find anyone to open the door on the... Read More

I wanted to share my feedback on the recent service I received from the company. I’m extremely unhappy and disgusted with the company. I have had a contract with the company since 2008. I’m a widow and I pay for the warranty every month because I cannot afford costly repairs on my appliances. Unfortunately, my ac decided to break on one of the hottest days in my area. I submitted a request to repair my ac on Saturday morning July, 22nd. I then proceeded to call the company to try to expedite my request. On Saturday, my city was under a heat advisory warning and the temp was going to be a 100 degrees. After sitting on the phone for almost an hour I finally received a... Read More

Have had this warranty for nearly one year. Called to have AC fixed May 1. They sent out a repairman who noted on the form that he replaced a capacitor when he verbally told us he put in gas but could not find a leak. The AC went out again this past Fri 7/14. I called and got a recording. I reported the problem but never received a call from anyone. I got an email from AHS on Sat at 6:44 am stating who would be calling to schedule an appointment. After we did not hear from anyone beyond the 24 hours I called another company on Sunday morning to fix the air. I sent AHS an email cancelling the service call and let them know I had called someone else. I called AHS customer service... Read More

This warranty company is a joke. Every time you call to make clam it is anywhere from 45 mins to 1hr and 30 mins. My last clam had to do with my well pump leaking for the fourth or fifth time. I call hour and 28 mins later they made a calm. Never heard back from anyone in 24 hours I called back on a Saturday took 25 mins to get through spoke to some that told me my clam was cancelled due to over money allowed. I was explaining that the company came out replaced water pump and it keep leaking in the same spot. So now my water pump has been leaking for five days and no one is coming out for another two days. This is after I had to talk to a manager from AHS and to the company myself to set... Read More

We have been waiting over two months. No call backs no one to fix our ac. Keep saying there backed up. We even called the ac people ourselves and said there were 30 people in front of us. Call at least three times a week on hold over 45 minutes every time. No answer

I cannot believe you post this company as being in the top ten! Every review I read was like I was rereading the same miserable service was given to everybody. I know as I also have had disgusting service from these people. The technician wrote up my kitchen stove as being in need of replacement as it was too old to repair. Ok so I wait and wait for some type of response from the company. Nothing! After many hours on the phone with people whom could hardly speak english (nightmare trying to converse ) I finally got them to understand that I had nothing to cook in. Days later I called again to be told that they had found a firm that specializes in out of date stove parts but it would take... Read More

I am a customer of AHS, but I won't be as soon as my contract expires. I have not had one service call where I paid the contractor on the spot that AHS recorded it as paid. I even had the contractor call AHS to tell them I paid their service fee and still had to call again twice because they can't keep track of their money. You have to wait on the phone for 30 minutes or more...if the system they use doesn't hang up on your 4 or 5 times while you are waiting...just to talk to someone. Now imagine doing this after every. single. service. call! Tonight I called and waited and waited just to have them tell me I'd have to call back tomorrow because I have to be on the phone with them at... Read More

I have been trying to and trying to get a hold of this company for work that was done in my home. I bought a home and soon after, a leak in my upstairs bathroom was found. Once I FINALLY reached them, I told them of that problem and a few others, they told me a company would come out on a certain date, they did not. They rescheduled and came and I paid them the $75.00 fee. The next day I called them back because I forgot to tell them about my shower leaking and to add it to the list of problems to be addressed and was informed that I would have to open a new work order and pay another $75 even tho no one had been to my home and no work had been started. RIDICULOUS! It took them 5-6 weeks... Read More
