Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been a costumer for 3-4 yrs already. I called since last week and I am put on hold for at least 45 mins-1 hour for customer service to pick up. I have a dispatch number and I called the company that was referred to me and they said they did NOT received an email from you. I have been calling you guys since last week but to no avail. I tried going to your website to request for another order but I could not because they have a standing order with the same appliance. I looked up your reviews here and it seems like i am not the only one who is not happy with how you do business with your customers. Time to look for another home warranty company.

Been trying to cancel all morning. Called the number I was instructed to call and then I get transferred from one person to another and then in the "hold" queque. Now been 41 mins and still holding. Finally get a rep only to be told that I have to call another number! So why can't you post that other number on your website????? So now, I'm holding yet again!! So fed up with their nonsense of why they can't pay for this and why they can't pay for that. Even when it's covered under my plan. Was told I can't speak to a manager but they will have a "TL" which I presume means team leader - to call me within 24 hours. Worse customer service I have ever experienced and I still haven't been able... Read More

There is absolutely nothing good you can say about this company. - Customer service is terrible. I was left on hold for over 45 mins after trying to resolve an issue that was created by them. - the HVAC tech they assigned did not show up for original appointment and then said it would be another week before he could get on the calendar. Being in the service industry this is one of the worst service companies i have ever dealt with.

You can never get ahold of these people! If you have any problems, plan to spend at least 45 mins on hold. Their Facebook page is riddled with complaints of outrageous call hold times.

Worst Customer Service ever! Uncaring, rude and generally incoherent staff. AC had problem on 6/29. Was switiching on and off and leaking in our basementCalled in, had to wait over an hour to get through, and after a few days, a tech did come out. Problem with a switch. After two weeks, leaks started again. Had to place another call, AHS said we would not have to pay deductible, and same tech came out. As soon as tech left, AC started leaking gain. Called both AHS and tech, they returned within an hour and we made them stay until the AC unit went through the cycle. This AM rec'd an email from AHS about overdue service call charge. After an hour on hold, SC rep said tech said yet... Read More

The tech was rude, refused to provide the summary of issues and he was not helpful and dismissive of our concerns. Have not been able to get in touch w/AHS to discuss (on hold for 1 hr 3 separate times). The electrical box is melting with no help.

This is literally the worst customer service I have ever received. Our AC was leaking and we called AHS (first time to ever call during our 1.5 yrs) on 7/14 only to be put on hold for a total of over 2.5 hours before reaching someone. Once we finally did reach someone we let them know we contacted another company and asked if we could get reimbursement. They just called today, 5 days later, and the woman was so rude that we will be canceling our contract. She referred over and over to the contract letting us know secondary damage isn't their problem and it was clear she could care less. When you pay for a service you expect it to be done right, but overall customer service is so much... Read More

Still on hold ............lost all my Costco food time off work 12-5 hour window showed up at 5:15 could not get ahold of AHS?? Still on hold 1.5 hours "your call is important to us" "the next rep will be here to assist you" LOL Still on hold.........Tired and hanging up!! Great Service

I am in the process of exploring my options for a Home Warranty and was very disappointed to read all the negative reviews. I am that consumer that actually reads customer reviews beforehand. To send non-renewal notices for simply expressing concerns (online). That is exactly why consumers read reviews, to see how companies handle situations. AHS you failed! However, that is not the only thing that concerned me......your extended hold times are a major concern as well.
