Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I was going to make this a long and very detailed statement but I will not, This company has frustrated me and has caused my blood pressure to rise even more. It has already elevated since I had to move my family out of my house since my AC went down and with 8 days gone by now and my kids medical condition was bothered by not having air. The problem has yet to be fixed and nearly 10 plus calls later. I dont think it will be fixed tomorrow. I am looking for after the holidays. Its frustrating to have to be on hold for 1-2 hrs before you get help and then they dont give you all the information and you have to call back. Then after all the phone calls you almost get to the end , but that is... Read More

Difficult getting someone to come do service. No emergency service. My AC started shutting itself off on Saturday. I live in FL, 86 degrees in my home. Finally received phone call on Monday morning and they set appt for 2 to 5 the next day. AC still working intermittently. Never showed at eight o'clock was still way from arriving. Set another appt for Thursday 2-5. Arrive around 430, did a few things, swore it was fixed. Was blowing cool air but not cold, and he would not stay to be sure working. Ten minutes later, not working at all and no it is 830 pm and I have NO AC and he is not coming back. So two nights no air and all day for my dog at 86 degrees, and I left work an hour and a half... AHS is the only warranty company I've used but, none could be worse. I've had a home warranty for 3 years. The contractors they select are either too busy or send untrained folks. I've had to go to their escalation team on every claim. Even in the case of water damage in Florida they still think 3 business days is fast enough. There will be mold in the home long before the contractor even contacts me. Now I am chasing them to take my money to get my home warranty back enforce after the credit card company sent me a new credit card (number changed charge wouldn't go through). I've been on hold over 50 minutes on at least two occasions and usually it's 30 minutes or more. I even started... Read More

In general, American Home Shield does what it says it will. When I have a problem with one of my covered items/appliances, I file a claim, and they send someone to fix it (and I pay the deductible). In terms of them getting things fixed eventually, yes, this always happens for the claims I have filed. However, I've been dissatisfied with a number of aspects of how the process of repairing household appliances works with American Home Shield. First of all, when I file a claim, it usually takes a repair company a few days to contact me to make an appointment, and then usually a few more days for them to come out to my house to begin the repair process. If the appliances were of trivial... Read More

This is absolutely the worst service from any warranty company , we fought these people for 33 days with up to 120 degree weather. Could not get our Ac repaired , just excuses and a run around. They lie from one call to another, have no sense of urgency could care less about their customers. We finally had it repaired on our own total loss 5,000. Do not recommend this company save your money.
