Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have had AHS for one year and recently filed a claim for the repair of our over the range microwave. The servicing company was unable to locate the necessary repair parts because the manufacturer no longer made them available. AHS notified us of this and advised that we needed a new unit. They provided a new unit with all the features we had but also gave a dollar figure that we could use to shop for a unit that we liked. We located a replacement, and had it installed. The invoice was sent to AHS and we received full reimbursement in about ten days.

I have both good and bad experiences with AHS. First, the good. Getting service through their website is easy. It saves me the hassle of trying to go through the phone book calling contractors to see if they are available. Also, I know each repair is only going to cost me $75 (in addition to the cost of the policy). There are a few problems, though. It can be very difficult to reach AHS by phone if you need to talk to someone. You will be on hold so long you will wonder if anyone is actually working there. They do NOT provide an email address as they don't want to hear from you. This company is CUSTOMER AVOIDANT. Secondly, if you have a problem with a contractor, they may not... Read More

I have a $75 service credit for a mistake AHS made. I was told that I could not apply it to a recent request made online, it had to be through customer service. I am now having problems with my air conditioner and am on hold. I was disconnected after 20 minutes the first time. I have now been on hold for 58 minutes this time. All because I was told it has to be this way to use the credit. Sounds like they are purposely trying to keep me from using what is owed to me.

Still waiting for my electrical issue to be resolved. The current company is terrible about scheduling, last time I called to schedule they DID NOT call me to come out. At some point I think reviewing some of the vendors they use would be helpful. AHS always tries to work it out and make it right! I do also appreciate the weekend my AC went out and had someone come out to repair it then submitted to AHS to be reimbursed...which they did! Much appreciated!

Poor service - each time. The "service reps" just tell you what you want to hear. Nothing is ever resolved and each time I call it is over an hour on the phone. Once a couple of weeks ago, I was on hold for 55 minutes, then on the phone with the rep for 15 when the rep asked me to hold while she called the repair company to check on my service request. When she returned to speak with me she cut me off - so an hour and 20 minutes wasted. I had to call back and start over. Then again a 45 minute hold time. When I asked this service rep if they would call me back if we got cut off - they said that they can't make outgoing phone calls. Well - how in the heck did the previous rep... Read More

It is ALWAYS difficult to get through with long wait times. AHS uses smaller, seemingly less experienced companies rather than the bigger names that most people have heard of and hear advertised. There was even a company that had been sent to my home for a repair, did nothing. When AHS tried to contact them they would not return THEIR calls yet, when I called for another service, they were listed as a premier provider. While It may be worth having this warranty, I have not shopped around to see if there are other warranty companies out there that provide better customer service.

Worst company I've ever dealt with for customer service my whole life ! First time I was put on hold for 25 minutes ,second time I was put on hold for 27 minutes ,third time I was put on hold for 34 minutes the fourth time It was for 23 minutes .fith time I was put on hold for over 25 minutes and I finally hung up ! Charged me twice 100$ each visit to same job! Sent out a scary looking un knowledgeable tech , that tried to blame my ac not working on a relay system that you want to charge $150 for what I had another company come in they found out it was a leak in my Freon nothing to do with that at all the farthest thing you could even imagine to have nothing to do each other what kind... I had to make two calls about my ac unit. The first call the contractor came out and fixed whatever problem that I had. I payed the service call and another fee for whatever they did. The second call was within 3 weeks of the first one and I was told the compressor had gone out. It took them soooo long to order the part and set an appointment to come out and fix it, that I was able to find a reputable company to replace the whole unit be for I received a call to set an appointment. This was and is the worst service that I have ever paid for in my life. Slow service, AHS and their contractor where never on the same page. 👎
