Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Any home repair is made easy. I go online, enter the info, and less than 24 hrs the contractor is communicating with me. I have dealt with several different companies and all have been excellent

I have been a customer with AHS for over 5 years and the customer service and lack of priority and care for the customer is unacceptable. My issue has been going on for 3 months and AHS has not tried to remedy or rectify the situation. I have requested that my claim be escalated to a manager and that a manager give me a call back. NO ONE from AHS has returned my call. The contractors they send out for repairs are not skilled or licensed to complete the repairs required. The contractor was very unprofessional and showed up 2 hours after my service window, left dry wall on my floor and inside my tubs. I reported this issue to AHS and NO ONE has done anything about this. Not to mention... Read More

They always find a way to NOT cover things that go wrong in the house. For those things they do cover, they seem to have contracted with hustlers who will gladly take your $75 house call fee, yet always claim AHS won't cover or can't seem to get approval for all the work that needs to be performed. I called AHS for a broken garage door problem and the company they had contracted to come out claimed all this extra work needed to occur at an exorbitant cost because AHS wouldn't completely cover it. After taking the $75 fee, they didn't fix anything. I then had to call another, reputable company we found on Yelp, who came out and fixed the problem for less than half the AHS vendor... Read More

I have had AHS send 2 different contractors here since early June to fix my a/c the house is getting up to 80 during the day and the a/c is not cycling on and off resulting in two electric bills of almost $600 each and another to follow. Both contractors state the a/c has aged past it's efficiency and AHS closed case stating all parts work. There are exclusions in the policy for replacement of unit for efficiency none apply to this case. In my opinion AHS is not honoring it's contract. Additionally it is a min 40 minute wait on hold every time you call. I do not recommend this provider.

The contractors were very professional. They were dressed appropriately, were here in an acceptable time and conducted themselves in an appropriate manner. They had to order a part and come back to install it. I was very pleased with their performance.

I have had an American Home Shield warranty for 2 years now. I have only had to file one claim since we began coverage and was VERY happy with the quick response and the service man who came to our house. I was able to complete my claim online and the service man called me within a very short period of time (1-2 hours the same day). I was able to set up an appointment for the next day. I only paid $75 and my kitchen sink was totally unclogged and my garbage disposal has worked with no problems since then. I am very pleased with the company American Home Shield sent out to our house - they were very friendly and efficient. I will continue my warranty this year.

A very dishonest company. They try to portray in their paperwork and contract that they will cover many expenses but deny everything when one calls them.

Cancelled my policy today and will never return. Put money away for those unexpected house issues. It will cost you less in the long run. Now my story: Had air conditioning problems and AHS sent out a contractor. The contractor ended up not even showing up and I got transferred to another aircon company. They could not come out to my house for four days. I had informed AHS that I was already without aircon for three days and now I am expected to go another 4 days. I live in Tucson, Az and it is 100 degrees outside and hitting 90. I informed them that I have a friend in the aircon business and he can fix my problem today. They informed me that I must use one of their people. Why am I... Read More
