Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Very disappointed in AHS. Our A/C broke 3 days ago and I logged a service request online to have a technician come out. A technician was assigned, but their office was closed for the weekend, so I called AHS back to obtain a different technician because the outside temperature was 101 and would be 95+ for the next few days. I was told (after being on hold for almost an hour) we would have to wait because there was already a technician assigned and that the temperature was not considered an emergency. The inside of our house was 98 degrees day and night even with fans running all over the house. I asked what constituted an emergency and was told that they cannot discuss that with... Read More

Absolutely horrible customer service. Been a customer for several years and each time I have had to call for service, hold time is more than 30 minutes. We have been without AC for 19 days and counting. Contractor says it will be an additional 3 days before they can get out to repair. Very frustrating as no one with this company cares about customer service at all, contract only states that a representative will call you within 48 hours, please note that doesn't mean they will be out to service whatever the problem is, nothing about service being done in a timely manner at all, you have absolutely no control over when the system is actually repaired.

Totally a scam. I am in Kentucky and the only air conditioner service contractor is 100 miles away. Never answers calls, plus have looked them up on several review sites and basically they say they are dishonest. American Shield say he is the only one I can use. Considering suing them for breach of contract. Meanwhile my air conditioner is still not fixed.

Our first experience with them was fine, but when it came to the air conditioner, it is a different story. We needed a part replaced that was covered, after our deductible was paid, but the big cost comes later. They obviously have to remove the freon to do the repair. To put the freon back in, it is $65/lb. They are only willing to cover $10/lb, leaving us with the rest, which is $550. We don't have that, so we've just have had no central air all summer in this 102-107 degree Texas heat. Thank God for window units. AHS should do better than this. VERY disappointed, and will reconsider whether to continue giving them our money for less than decent service.

They left us without ac for two weeks in the summer in Texas. Impossible to contact and didn't seem to care at all that it was 100+ degrees that hole two weeks.

I love American home shield. They have excellent customer service and are quick to resolve the problem. The most recent contractor Collins appliance service however I was not very impressed with because of their poor communication.

Overall, I am very pleased with my experences so far. I have had only a few calls that did not go well (didn't call for service, never came, came but did not fix the problem, came and then invalidated the service call). The majority have gone very well (fast response, good service man, repsectful, clean, on time, completd the job, didn't overcharge me, the rapairs were completed under contract, no hidden charges).

Upon reporting my air conditioner needed repair, the customer service at American Home Shield was right on it. They kept me informed every step of the way as to who was coming to do the repairs, when and then checked to see that the work had been done. The detail work of the customer service on my behalf could not have been better. The contractor was satisfactory and the fellows actually doing the work were so polite and determined to make sure all was working properly before they left it was nice to have a pleasant work experience.

The last time I used AHS was for a faulty furnace. The tech was here the next day and diagnosed the problem almost immediately (it was the thermostat). Everything was handled very professionally. I am very satisfied with AHS and the contractor.

This company engages HORRIBLE contractors! We canceled our policy after being assigned ANOTHER UNPROFESSIONAL contractor. Although we contacted AHS to explain our concerns and ask for a different contractor, we where denied any options, I was literally told, "YOU DON"T HAVE A CHOICE TO PICK WHO COMES INTO YOUR HOME, AHS has the RIGHT TO CHOOSE" WHAAAAAAT? Formal complaints have been filed on both AHS and contractors they engage with. DO YOUR HOMEWORK, read reviews and make calls! Sadly, AHS was recommended to us by real estate professionals, however, they have been informed and are now making other recommendations. Do Not Engage...Warning!
