Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

AHS assigned a terrible vendor to fix my refrigerator. (Appliance Repair Experts) Took them almost 2 months to order a part. Vendor will change date of in 4 occasions. When I called AHS to complained they will side with vendor and said I had to give them a chance to fix it. 2 months without a fridge in the desert. I have an older mother and a surgery myself without food, we had to go out to eat daily. I was shocked company will not protect their customers from unprofessional vendors. Technicians were rude and unprofessional. They wouldn't even put back the fridge where it belonged.

I am so dissatisfied with AHS. I have spent 3 weeks and hours and hours of my personal time on the phone with them to get my water heater replaced. I still have a broken water heater. The technician refused to come to my home to install the water heater unless I pay in $850 in advance for modifications that have already been done. NO, I am not paying $850 for $50 in parts and 1 hour worth of time. The technician and AHS have said, 1- AHS does not reimburse the technicians enough to cover the cost of the replacement of the water heater and that they make their money off of the modifications, 2 - The technician offered that a cash out offer. Beware! It took the "cash out" team over a... Read More

Horrible customer service. If the technicians they send fix your problem, you have no problem, however, if they send someone who doesn't want to fix it, they will deny any and all coverage. We had a clogged sink: they sent a technician who couldn't fix it after an hour, so he left, saying in his report: Sink clogged, couldn't clear line. We called to request another technician. They sent another, who stayed for a whole 10 minutes before saying the same thing. 5 weeks later, talking to multiple representatives, they claimed about 20 things that they wouldn't cover (all things that were clearly in the contract that they covered), and completely refused to fix the issue. "Handyman" relative... Read More

My experience with AHS this past year has been horrible. Now to add insult to injury, I received a premium renewal notice which reflects a 15% increase over last year ($600), and a whopping 100% over the initial $315 when I enrolled in 2014! When I called to cancel today, I was told the cancellation department couldn't handle my call today, but my request would be submitted. Unbelieveable!!

This company uses extremely deceptive practices. The intentionally prevent you from being able to communicate with the same person twice - and are quick to provide you with blanket statements about how they don't cover things. Moreover, note their contact states they cover things like plumbing and electricity, but then note that another part of their contract states that they are not responsible for access to covered items. That means that anything behind walls - which electricity and plumbing inherently - are not covered... because you would, apparently have to knock down drywall/walls to provide the servicer access before they will even look at the affected item. They sent a far... Read More

Hi: I was a paid subscriber to American Home Shield for a year or so. Overall, the experience was terrible. They are nearly impossible to contact, except when they want to sign you up. After that, you can expect wait times of LITERALLY hours without getting an answer. An error on their part prevented me from using the website order system and I was also never able to get through on the online chat feature due to "unusually" high volume. Once I was able to get through, I found that many of the contractors they used were extremely unprofessional and unqualified. American Home Shield only uses very cheap replacement parts and components, even though they claim to use "equivalent"... Read More

I used this for a faucet that had a leak in the hose, it took 4 weeks for the company to fix it and they did not replace it with the same brand that I had but with a lower grade facet. I am not happy with service , I have tired to call the plan but have not been able to get thru their phone lines. I am sorry that I ever took this service. Linda Jennings

I've had them for 2 years now. Good service. Disappointed that they do not cover pest control like the policies I have with other companies, on my other properties. Will be switching when my contract is up.

Save your money is right. I have been paying for 2 years. My central air unit broke in the beginning of the summer. We called AHS they sent a company called Liberty Plumbing and Heating LLC out of New Jersey They came said I I needed a new coil the air broke the hottest days we have had yet. My house is for sale as well. We have called Liberty Plumbing and Heating LLC numerous times as well as AHS. The first night it broke it was 89 degrees in my house. I don’t have double hung windows to put a window unit in and as for a stand alone unit I don’t have a window to pipe it out of. AHS was going to give me $125 for an ac unit. But I can’t put one in the window. I have 8 fans going in my... Read More
