Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

So, our central air conditioning died after a very crazy rain storm. If you are aware of Oklahoma's sweltering summer heat, then you can feel the pain. If you have ever been 8 months pregnant under normal conditions, you will also feel my pain. We called American Home Shield in hopes that they could remedy the situation as quickly as possible. After A LOT of waiting they finally told us that the AC person that they contract with could come 6 DAYS from the day we called. My husband told them that was unacceptable because we were not in a livable situation, in fact, we had to splurge on a hotel room that first night because our house was beyond 95 degrees inside. They told us they would... Read More

I believe this company is related to Statewide Warranty which went out of business. I know most of these companies like Statewide are a bunch of scams. I even did research on this company with BBB and they have no complaints. After they refused to replace my AC unit (which was covered) , I called there state where they are located and got nowhere as they are protected. I received a letter from Statewide with $300. refund. I paid $2800. for my new AC unit. Scams Scams, Scams!!

We had one of AHS' certified technician come out to look at the microwave in April, they found nothing. After continuing to have problems the next technician who looked at it in July discovered wires fused together and the appliance to be a fire hazard. This will be the second time an AHS certified technician either completely missed an issue or performed an installation incorrectly - and additional order, in relation to repairing our A/C unit was only necessary because the technician called to fix the furnace installed wiring incorrectly. Was told the service fee still applied because each case was a separate work order. If you enjoy paying multiple times to get the same issue fixed, AHS... Read More

Absolutely HORRIBLE!!! I had their coverage more than 10 years ago and then they were great. Recently moved into a new home and got new coverage thru AHS. After about a month and a half our refrigerator went out, we called and made a claim. They were wanting us to wait 3 days just to get a technician out! This is a REFRIGERATOR people.. a basic necessity! After much complaining they did get somebody out the next day. He determined that it was a goner and that we would need a new one. The tech was great, he let us eavesdrop on the conversation with AHS.. it was like pulling teeth to get them to agree to replace it. Now they want us to wait FOUR DAYS?!?! Again.. this is a... The service is getting worse over time and the rates are always increasing after service visits. And talking about service, all that is done by AHS is to make sure that the bare minimum is done to get the appliance working, without any care or will on their part to do any necessary replacement!! Even in cases where the servicing company expresses concerns to the client (and back to AHS) about danger of fire! Case in Point: recently we had service done on our dryer for (at least) the third time when the need for replacement became clear due to earlier damaged electric wires. The technician did his job taking care of the noise problem we had reported (caused by some loose metal pieces... Read More

Impossible to get them on the phone without at least an hour for automated questions and dropped calls. Unable to log in, doesn't recognize my contract number. Tried 3 times to correct their incorrect info on our account, address, etc. VERY terrible customer service.

I dont understand their high rating..my granddaughter hot water heater broke..this is a family of five..their response to her call is "this is not urgent"..when the repairman came out he said it needs a part..more days delay..then a call saying "we cant find the part" the water heater is only 3 years old...terrible service!! My nephew has had similar experiences...very poor service and will not use them again

I would not recommend American Home Shield to any consumer looking to protect the appliances in your home with a reparable, dependable, and consumer-oriented home warranty. The company's service is beyond the level of failure to a person in need. I expected when purchasing the home warranty that I was protecting my home. However, not one time when I really needed AHS was the company able to fix the appliance as they should. The companies that AHS contract with are subpar. My final straw is holding for customer service over 3 hours on today because AHS representatives refused to allow me to speak with a supervisor regarding my issue. The company should be closed immediately.

You have to fight for every thing to be fixed and the repair person will say, yup you need a new washer. You are waiting for your new washer, so you call AHS, they say, oh no we can fix it with parts? I'm like, what? That's not what the repair guy said who was here? Then it always eventually ends up to what the repair guy says,.but after four visits and six weeks with no washer...poor customer service

Very disappointed with Customer Service and billing. I have been on the phone for 1 hour and 25 minutes and transferred multiple times after asking twice to speak with a supervisor. Simple as requesting a credit ! Which according to Customer Service, cannot be done. Very frustrating.
