Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

My biggest fear comes true: I've been paying the monthly premium of $ 39 for years. Now remember..... American Home Shield had NO problem collecting the monthly premiums for those years...... the this week I called American Home Shield for a problem with my fridg ice maker dispenser AND microwave (turntable). After collecting $ 100 fee from me, they sent out one of their contractors (unpleasant), said we've have the parts and installation in 3 days. On day 4, after no response I called contractor (no return call) and AHS, got them on line and they said that my claim was denied, reason: I forcefully broke my ice dispenser and microwave truntable ....NOT COVERED....of course I... We had a problem with our refrigerator. American Home Shield sent out a professional within a few days and the problem was immediately repaired.

In this case we had a leak under a sink. The "plumber" sent spent 45 min to an hour and did not identify a problem... a NTF (No trouble found). The next day my contractor happened to be here and there was, again, water under the sink. I asked him to take a look (even with his protestations he really isn't a plumber) and in a couple of minutes (less than 5) found the tightener on the water pipe feeding the sink was loose/about to fall off. He tightened it and no trouble since. I may be wrong but the guy sent by AHS seemed inept... certainly he was unable to diagnose or fix a very simple problem. AHS told us there was no chance of a return of our fee despite the total failure, Seems wrong.... Read More

When calling in to report a repair or to follow up with a service call I am put on hold way to long. It seems to me Home Shield needs more customer service experts to help customers so we are not on hold for so long.

Terrible company!!! Told one thing in an email then told another on the phone. The whole issue wasn't fixed. Pay 75 for nothing to get fixed and more out of pocket and do I get reimbursed nope and they keep my 75. What a waste! I've started fixing things on my own.

Hope this will be helpful to someone. I have AHS but it did not help with my air & heating unit last summer. The service calls did not work. Did not make since to keep spending money with no result. Had to purchase a unit, informed AHS, but no partial payment considered.

Work order 441695212 from 1/19/18. I had a water heater replaced and my kitchen faucet was damaned during the process. The kitchen sink was supposed to be fixed as part of work order 441695212. However, since 1/30/18, I have been receiving notices in the mail and email about owing $100. AHS and Mount Plumbing both agreed the kitchen sink should be part of the original work order. I have called AHS multiple times about the extra $100 that was a billing and customer advocate error. Without a doubt, the Customer Advocates and Accounting Department are taking entirely TOO LONG to solution this billing ERROR. I have been dealing with this ERROR for almost 3 MONTHS. I am a person who has no... Read More

I am an existing customer with ahs. I have been with the company for about 20 years. I am extremely disappointed in the service contractor assigned to an existing order. Truly unprofessional. Order has been opened for nearly a month with no resolution. AHS has given approval however, assigned company is pathetic! Luther Mcclain

Never any follow up. Even if the job was not completed you have to pay an additional copay to bring the contractor back
