Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Used them for the first time recently. The claim was handled quickly and the repair carried out perfectly. I am very happy with AHS

My refrigerator/freezer was not working properly. It was not cold enough and some of my food spoiled because of that. When I asked for service AHS picked a good service firm. They came out the next day and fixed the problem quickly. The technician was polite and clean. He knew what he was doing, fixed the problem, cleaned up the mess and left. I'm very pleased with the timeliness and quality of service provided.

Never any friction. These folks are not only courteous and helpful, but fast to respond. Service appointments are met on a timely basis, and by qualified professionals.

This is my second time around with AHS. I was with them for about 15 years on 3 houses, and spent over $12k insuring the homes. At first they were great. Then, they got horribly ridiculous! On 3 different calls, 3 denials for loopholes you don't expect. So I left them and was gone for 3 years. I decided to try them again, and I found they had greatly improved from the 3 years they spent "in the toilet". Now you pay up front for your service call, there are far less loopholes for them to point to, there is less communication needed, and things go smoother. The only improvement that may be needed is the urgency on the part of the contractor they hook you up with. No one thinks... Read More

Worst home warranty company I ve experienced. Their price is very high comparing with other ones. Their customer service line forever busy and hang you up any time. I paid several years of payment for several houses. They refuse to cover problem for you as they claimed.

I requested repair from my pool equipment In late December , but still on March 22nd the problem has not been solved. Despite I called both the contractor and American Home Shield several times, the only response I got was that I need to keep waiting. Beware of AHS, the contractors they used are not good as they promised, and if anything goes wrong , AHS does not stand on your side.

A.M.S. Is a fantastic policy. We move in our July 2017. We had several problems. Not one issue at all to get service or replacement items. We had the policy when we purchased our home. We are so satisfied we renewed another year. I check their competitors. American Home Shield is the only to get.

I had a plumbing issue that was leaking through the ceiling. I explained the urgency and was told I was put on a 4 hr response watch. Long story short, I never got assigned a plumber and when I called back they said their was no one in my area. Then they finally assign me one and come to find out that place doesn't service my area. You guys finally find one but they are on some ridiculous hold and don't come off the hold list until midnight. Which bled into the weekend. And guess what, you don't do over the weekend or emergency calls. Oh and you don't cover secondary damage. So that makes you useless!

The contractor solved my plumbing problem so great. But it was not covered by warranty. The contract says plumbing but they need to be more specific.
