Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

i have been waiting for 9 days to get my water heater replaced. AHS sent the first company out on day 3, they indicated that the water heater needed to be replaced. AHS indicated they wanted to send another company out for a second opinion, not sure why. I had to wait another 3 days just for them come out and take pictures of the same issue that was reported by company #1. Now AHS has what they need so you would think they would have called the 1st company back, since the water heater is under warranty, to give them authorization to proceed with the replacement. NOOOO...they did not. So day 8&9 I have called AHS, with 35-45 minute wait times, to see when the authorization would go... Read More

A first-class operation. They get the problem solved quickly and professionally. The contractors that they use are all screened and know what they're doing. I would recommend American Home Shield to anyone for that peace of mind that we all need.

AHS has quickly gotten someone to us when we've requested service. However, I should be able to select from multiple company's that they work with. I was unhappy with the service provided from a contractor and requested another company be sent out, AHS stated that there was no other company in the area that they work with. This was upsetting being I am a home owner and should be provided options if I am unsatisfied.

I think the wait time for someone to answer the phone to get service is crazy. With all the money you guys make you need to hire more help answering the phone. On each call I have made to AHS, the wait time was at least 45 mins. or longer. The reasons I heard from customer service are crazy. As far as the plumber they first sent out were dishonest people. You guys need to check these repairmen out before you send them out. I appreciate being allowed to get a second opinion. My second opinion plumber was GREAT and all the things the first plumber stated was proven to be wrong. I think you need to hire someone to look at the Better Business Bureau on some of your contractors.

Here we are going in to month 7 of having a late service fee due from early January. It still hasn't been taken care of like I have been told on numerous occasions by many different associates and supervisors. Why is it so difficult to fix someone's account? I don't think I will renew my contract in October since this company doesn't seem to care about their customers. I have never had such an issue with a company and this is absolutely ridiculous. I will never refer anyone to this company, as a matter of fact I will tell them to definitely go somewhere else and not even bother looking into this company. I sure hope this company gets its act in gear and do the right thing. How would you... Read More

I called for an A/C service request. The A/C was blowing warm hair. AHS sent out a vendor (AMA Air). AMA Air said that AHS does not cover my problem and for $1300 they would fix it for me. I laughed and told the technician to leave. I felt this technician was trying to rip me off. I called a vendor that was recommended by my neighbor. They came out and fixed my problem which was a restriction. They charged me $500. AHS needs to be more careful with which vendors they make agreements with.

I've had this company for several years. They hired a company to repair my forced air heater. The guy replace a motor, but didn't replace the fuses. Then in spring when a/c went out because of the fuse, they still demanded I pay the service fee. Also, my dishwasher went out. They sent repair man, who determined could not be repaired. I asked for check to get what I had (almond colored), they never sent it out, then when I requested it, they said I had to pay for another service fee to have another repair man to re-inspect to get the check I was already approved for. I've never received the check. I think this company is a racket.
