Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

It took 2 different phone calls for me to finally receive the due diligence I would have expected in researching my issue. The first time I called I was put on hold several different times adding up to about 45 mins hold time. The second time I called the representative was great about connecting to the right people and getting my resolution. The unfortunate thing is that even though she said the fee would be removed I'm still receiving diliquent notices! I shouldn't have to make so many calls. My issue should have never been an issue at all.

35 days and still no hvac and it's 100 degrees! American home shield will send sub-standard contractors who submit sub-standard reports/estimates, then you'll get a denial from ahs for the work.... Then you must request a "second opinion"... Another sub-standard contractor.... My second contractor came out on a saturday, and as of thursday had not even submitted his report/estimate to ahs. When he finally sent it, ahs had "to ask contractor more questions" and were "trying to get in touch with him." but, this contractor never answers the phone and has no voice mail system.... In 2017? This is the caliber of contractors ahs uses. So, we're over the one month mark while waiting for... Read More

I have been a customer for more than 10 years and was pleased with the service until recently. That is the only reason I am giving a rating of two stars rather than one. We had some plumbing work done that was covered by the warranty but the plumber had to cut numerous holes in the kitchen ceiling to diagnose the issue. I have been trying to contact AHS for the past week to find out when someone could come patch the ceiling. I have called 5 times and after ridiculous hold times (30 minutes plus) I have not been able to speak to a person. Today I hung up after holding for 51 minutes. I posted a comment on their Facebook book page and was told to send an email to their social media address,... Read More

update - please see previous post from 6/9 & 12. I haven't posted an update in a while because I was hospitalized as a result of multiple heart attacks. (Which were partially stressed related.) I also was trying to give AHS time to come up with a fair solution. Stupid me. Well during this time there was one positive thing and only one. I was finally contacted by a gentlemen who appeared to be "genuinely" concerned with our situation. Unfortunately he works for a company that is not so the only benefit thus far is that he was (and I say was cause I have not heard from him in almost a month) respectful and listened. He also offered to buy us some fans and to pay a small portion of... Read More

I have been with AHS for all my homes for the last 8yrs. The wait times when you call are just ridiculous now but it is not a deal breaker. The last claim I had though, they sent out a new plumber and I did not trust his motives and requested a cash out to go with the usual plumber they send out. The shady plumber received almost $300 from the cash out just for coming out and lying about what he did ie he said he did a leak test in reality he was here 5mins and looked at the toilet flange since I already removed the toilet. I asked for a copy of his report to AHS to show his charges and they said, "we don't do any reports, it is all over the phone." To which I replied "so if I'm a plumber... Read More

My water heater went out and placed my service request on line. The automation voice said I would be contacted regarding my request before the service request could be completed: Problems: 1.) I was never contacted by AHS 2.) I contacted the service provider who was assigned and the earliest they could come was 4pm the next day; huge problem because we have no heated water 3.) Called AHS to request assistance in expediting my service and sat on hold (I'm not exaggerating) for ONE HOUR AND A HALF! Only to be told that since I didn't speak to someone sooner at AHS the service would likely be delayed even longer if I switched service providers! This is my second time trying to use my... I waited on the phone for 1 1/2 hrs before customer service finally came on the line. Had a plumbing issue and service technician was out to our home a week later on a Monday. He needed a part and today is Thursday still have not seen technician. Called technician directly and they have been waiting to get approval from AHS and cannot get through to customer service because of wait time. So here I am again waiting on phone 1 hr and 20 min. Trying to get ahold of AHS to get our issue resolved. Ridiculous!!!! I will be cancelling with this company!

I have been a client for 14 years! WAS! Started out low, premium and service call creeped up $10 every other year. Some years we used them, some years we didn't. Sometimes an electrician came out for $65 and flip a breaker! Garage door openers, smoke detectors Coverage are dumb! Appliances and pool equipment are essential! I had only a couple of bad attitude techs on the pool ( had to drive to far) and incompetent techs on the a/c ( fried internal parts and thermostat). Be prepared to pay pay for incidentals, bringing old a/c units up to code, that cost me $750. Appointments are not always the quickest. Current a/c problem ended up not being covered due to the fact of the new siding... Read More
