Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have been with AHS for many years. Sometimes I put in a service request, and never receive a call from the service people. I have found that they do not have enough service people for my area. One of the plumbers that came to my home was not licensed. This I discovered from the City of Chicago after they caused $30,000 worth of damage to my home. I put in a service request last Tuesday, and I am still waiting for the air conditioner person to come. Today is Monday of the following week. I don't know, but I think that's a long time to have to wait. It's looking like rain, so he probably won't service my unit today either. They don't follow-up on the calls to see if you have been... Tech came over to look into my pool heater problem. He analyzed that the switch membrane is broken and so is the controller. Claim that my controller was busted due to wire eaten by rodents. They can only repair the membrane but not the controller. Since I know a little about pumps I recheck the controller and it is working. Retape all the wires and then call AHS and informed them that I need only membrane fix. They said they could not do it since it has to be done all together. Told them that I will just buy the membrane and send them the bill. Customer service refuse. Do not understand why since my controller is still good, why repair it. Paid 75 for the contractor but have not heard... Read More

Use to think this Co was great. Going down hill. Needed a plumber but they couldn't get one to come out. Had a flood. Had to hire my own plumber. Only have one Pool Company and so far they are not reliable. I'm frustrated with AHS.

My seller purchased this warranty for me when I closed in December and based on my recent experience I would have to say that AHS sucks and you definitely lost 2 customers seeing how my sister was interested in a purchasing a warranty as well. I has taken 5 weeks for me to have my refrigerator fixed. 5 weeks without a refrigerator for a VEGAN is very costly! The time that it has taken to repair my refrigerator is unacceptable. I've worked from home to have repairmen not show up! After spending hours on hold I was finally given my $75 fee back which must be coming via satellite because I have yet to receive it! In December I will be using another company based off of this experience.

I have had AMERICAN Home Shield on my homes for about 15 years now and ever year they raise their rates. Last year we had to call the about the same issue over 7 times and the companies that they partnered with could not fix the problem properly and since we had so many calls they raised our rates to $2000/year. I then called Choice and signed up for about $650.

Nickeled and Dimed! I made a service request for plumbing issues I have been experiencing in my new house. american home shield assigned Aaron's plumbing to my service request. The plumber, Sam, arrived and looked over the issues I requested service on. At first he was very pleasant and seemed interested in resolving the problems. Sam spent almost two hours going through my house taking apart faucets, using an auger on a toilet, playing with toilet tanks, and taking notes. Sam left my house stating he would be back next week with a couple of guys to finish the work. And that's where it all went downhill. I waited almost an entire week and then I received a voicemail from a different... Read More

AC has been out for over a week. Cost to have someone come out was 75.00. Repair cost out of my pocket is 1,500.00. Decide since my unit is an older unit that I would go ahead and replace the AC and furnace. Out of pocket expense, 7400.00. AHS will compensate me 329.50 with the cash out option towards this. So much for the idea of saving money after being with them for over 10 years and this has been the biggest issue I have had.

Air conditioner has been out for a week. Cost out of my pocket to repair is the 75.00 service fee plus 1500.00. I thought the idea of AHS was to reduce my out pocket expense? Being that I have an older unit I have decided to replace the unit along with my furnace and upgrading to a heat pump system that is going to cost me 7400.00 out of pocket and the cash out option through AHS will only cover 329.50. So much for saving me money after paying all this money to them for over 10 years.
