Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I have had AHS for more than 5 years and I am pleased with the service that I have received. I make monthly payments by automatic draft. When I checked my account this morning, I noticed that two payments had been drafted for AHS. When I called them, I was given various inconsequential reasons, but the bottom line is I was told that the extra payment would be refunded within five days! After voicing my extreme dissatisfaction, I was told that she (the representative) would “email” the payment department my disagreement. When I asked for the number to the “payment department” I was told that she could not give out the number. Of course, I was completely put off by this time... Read More

The customer service is awful! I recently had to request service on two different occasions. The 1st one was fairly painless as I could set it up on-line however the 2nd one has been the worst customer service experience I have ever had. I once again tried to set it up on-line however when I submitted I received a message instructing me to call, so I called. I was on hold to speak with someone for just under an hour, but the hold recording assured me my call was important... um after 30 minutes I stopped believing it was. Call was set and unfortunately he problem was not one they could solve. So I called AHS back, wait time the time was at least under 20 minutes, to see if I would be... Read More

I would not go with this company. I had an plumber claim he did lots of work at my house, which they did not but AHS rep said if the plumber said they did the work, then they did the work and they wanted to charge me extra. They were extremely rude about it. Also if you need to call them for any reason, the wait time could be over an hour long, last time I called them, I was on hold for 1 hr and 10 min.

Don't waste your money. They are total Rip Offs...…...Came out to fix my oven, waited 2 weeks for a part they said it needed and when the service man came out he didn't even put the new part in. He said well its working right now. Yeah right now. Called the office and they said oh really he did that. Customer service is the worst and the people they get are not any better. # 1 company yeah for Rip Off companies they are. I would not recommend them to anyone.

I have had a policy with them twice. I cancelled the last time as they sent different contractors to fix a recurring AC issue. The first one brought a replacement fan for the outside unit with a shaft that was too long. I had to provide my sawsall and help him cut it down. The next time they were going to send a different person from a farther away area and he was mostly interested in the $100 fee and talked to me like I was a neophyte. I told him to forget it and cancelled my policy (however that took forever as I believe they only hire idiots at their call center). A previous example was when I prepaid the $100 on the internet to have my garage doors fixed. The contractor showed up and... Read More

Tom Texas Do not even consider doing business with this company. The wait time to talk with an agent is unbelievable. After purchasing my policy with my credit card for full payment they keep charging my card for monthly payment. After finally finding someone to charge my card for full payment. Days later I was notified that the payment did not go through. After about six hours on the phone some times with a 45--60 minutes hold time. I finally found someone that could charge my card for the correct amount. At this time after talking to a supervisor about my complain about the hold time ,I was told basically that was the system works . At this time I decided if I have this much... Read More

WE have had a HORRIBLE experience with this company. It's been a month and a half without an oven and they keep ordering the SAME replacement control panel (THREE TIMES) and then the contract company that keeps visiting the property - tells our tenants that they oven CAN NOT be replaced. I have been on hold with AHS for HOURS. The people I speak with will not/do not have any details regarding my account. They put me on hold to "call" the contract company and then I get hung up on after an hour of NO RESOLUTION. This has happened numerous times. I'm so fed up with this company. The hold time is totally unacceptable. They are stringing us along. They is no ability to actually talk... Read More

My newly purchased house, built in 2000, came with an AHS warranty, which I thought was a gimmick. But I've had wonderful service from AHS in the few months I've owned the house. And I've gone through the contract extensively, and it's surprisingly comprehensive. I've been able to put two service requests in online with no trouble (and no waiting on hold) and both times the service provider called me to schedule service within a few hours of me submitting my request. My first request was that the thermostats of my radiant floor heating did not seem to work separately. They paid for a full rebuild of the electronic system, as some previous company had cut all the wires to the... Read More
