Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

3rd time that I've had to use them in almost 10 years of coverage - this time a new AC unit was needed. Service was fast with no hassles what so ever! I beleive AHS truly cares about their customers and they are definitely worth the premiums paid just for the peace of mind.

After many years with AHS warranty, I've concluded that it's a rip off. I've called more than 5 times one central AC spending more than $600 in service fees for a problems that never seemed to stay fixed. I just recent had to call again and the problem is the evaporator coil, an expensive repair. I was informed by AHS that it would pay $2K plus for the repair and my portion, based on necessary freon and uncovered code requirements, would be $1100+. Because the unit is old and outdated and the too many service calls already, I called AHS and asked would AHS apply the $2K+ towards a new unit for which I would pay the difference. I was on hold for more than an hour b4 getting to the right... Read More

Slooooow service. Besides waiting two weeks for the initial vendor to show up after starting a claim, the vendor then put in the request for a simple thermocoupler for an oven within a week of the visit. Ahs did not order the part until 21 days later, with a delivery date of one more week. So once it comes in i'll still have to wait for scheduling the vendor to return, i'm looking at 6 weeks from first visit to final installation, and more when you consider the time between filing the claim and the first vendor visit! On the AC side, the original vendors they scheduled never showed and their voicemail box was always full.....enough said.

After 10 yrs , we cancelled our contract today with AHS. Two years ago our hot water heater went out. Because it's in the garage, we were told that it was not covered. So, we bought a new one and had it installed for$1100.00. We just found out that it was covered. Someone gave us the wrong information. Now, our ice maker went out in the frig so we called for service, a gentleman came out and said he would order a new senor. Received a phone call from AHS service stating that the ice maker was not covered but as an option and additional money per mo/yr, it would have been covered. No one explained that to us either. Now, they are telling us it would be $38.00 for us to cancel the... Read More

I had an issue with the plumbing under my kitchen sink and was also concerned about the ductwork that is under my house. I could feel lots of cool air 'escaping' from between the siding and foundation in spot in particular. I requested service online for my two issues so I didn't really deal with AHS customer service. The two companies that were chosen to service my issues contacted me right away and we found times that were workable for my schedule. The plumber came out and ended up replacing some pipes and connections under my sink and was gone in under an hour. Very happy with his work and professionalism. The HVAC guy came out and you could tell straight away he did NOT want to... Read More

This is the worst company ever!!! I called on a Monday to get a service call on my oven, on Tuesday the company assinged calls me to set up an appt from 2-5 on FRIDAY 4 days later. My husband took the afternoon off to be there from 2-5 we get a call at 3:30 after I text the company (becuase their voicemail box was full and you could not leav a message) asking for an update on ETA she calls to inform me that the techs car broke down and we need to reschedule to the next day with a window of 9-12, which I cannot do b/c my son has t-ball 10AM. I call AHS to inform them of all this and I waited on HOLD FOR 2 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES, yes you read that right. Finally reach a person and get told... Read More

I've needed 3 repairs done recently that were all covered by American Home Shield. One was electrical, one was a washing machine, and one was air conditioning. The only problem we had was a delay in some of the repairs because AHS had a problem finding a contractor in our area (we live in a rural area). Despite that, I still give them 5 stars because of the otherwise excellent service. They didn't try to find "loopholes" to get out of covering the repairs. (I used to have a company called Choice Home Warranty. They always had a reason to refuse repairs hidden in their contract.) The contractors that AHS used were prompt, professional, and pleasant. Thanks to AHS for being a reliable,... Read More

They are unresponsive, wait times to speak with a person to even request service average a hour. They have minimal contractors on their list even for emergencies, they have no direct contact number once you have had a bad experience and generally do not care if your issue is handled in a timely fashion. I had some sort of leak ongoing and after 1.5 hours on hold to speak with someone, they told me they had hours and hours to even locate a service professional who then had greater than 24 hours to respond. They refused to authorize my hiring of an outside contractor with subsequent reimbursement. The ongoing issue has caused further issues including electrical and drywall that they refuse... Read More

I have been been a member for approximately 20 years. I wouldn't have it any other way although the prices of course over the years have gone up, it still saves alot of money. These days it's so easy to get online with AHS and they contact contractors who then contact you to set up an appointment. A experienced contractor contact you almost immediately . Depending on the issue, you know you can depend on the service. I wouldn't have it any other way.
