Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Called them in June about my air conditioner. $100.00 and the guy said change your air filter. House was STILL not cool, paid an outside company to come in, they spent 4 hours and said the unit needed to be replaced. Call AHS back and I have to get there company back out again to see if they agree before they will pay me anything towards the purchase of a new air conditioning unit. They are difficult to get on the phone, and the companies they use never spend any time diagnosing the issues.

Many who have written reviews on here have apparently had the same bad experiences I've had. About three weeks ago I called AHS ,and that was an ordeal in itself. Finally getting someone after a 20 minute wait I was told I would get a call within 48 hours to set up an appointment from a technician to see why my small HVAC unit was not cooling properly. Three days later I get a call and was told someone would be out in 2 days between 10 and 12. They show up at 1:00 and I was told the problem was actually a dirty air filter on the unit. I had a new one under the house by the unit and he used it. Due to a family medical emergency I had to leave for several days and when I returned I relized... Read More

Buyer beware! I want to warn other considering purchasing a warranty from American home shield. My home in Arizona has a multizone ac system. 3 years ago ( 7 years after it was built) part of my house would be significantly hotter than the thermostat for that zone was set while another part significantly colder than the thermostat for that area was set. Half the house functioned normally with the corresponding zones maintaining temperature correctly. I have had ac repair men out to my house 5 times now. At 125 dollars for each visit and each time I was told either that nothing was wrong, or they could not figure out what was wrong and would lot help further, or added refrigerant to the... Read More

American Home Shield is the worst experience you can have. customer service Ha!. On hold for hours, send out inexperienced vendors and don't take responsibility for billing errors. On hold now for over 1 hour just trying to pay a bill. Don't get suckered.

I've never been so disappointed, and dissatisfied in my life. I've had the customer service reps, lie to me. I've had them be extremely unprofessional and uninterested, and inconsiderate of my home being without air for over a week. I understand there are policies that are followed. But I've also told them whoever they send out to my home for the 3rd time, cannot just come trip the ac to turn it back on with the moisture indicator. I've done that several times. Sure enough the tech came out from Home mechanical heating and air, turn the indicator back on and got paid 75.00 and left. He was rude and didn't want to listen to me. I explained the air will cool down then it will get hot... Read More

I have been trying to get through to customer service to no avail. Whenever I call, I am on hold for thirty to forty-five minutes. When the the technician came out to service the a/c, he did an incomplete job and gave a wrong diagnosis. I've been trying to get in touch with an AHS representative for the past two days. I am highly disappointed! I'm still waiting.

We have had an AHS Home Warranty for 9 years. We've only had two problems in those 9 years at our home that we reported to AHS. One involved our washing machine and several calls involved our air conditioning. The technician that fixed our washing machine was professional, timely and we have not had a problem since. However, the air conditioning is a whole different ballgame. About five years ago (July 2012), our air went out in the middle of the summer. A technician came out at least three times, each time doing something different but never fixing it. We finally had to break down and buy a window unit for our bedroom because it was so hot, we couldn't sleep. Finally, they agreed... Read More

I can imagine waiting that long for A/C in this heat is inconvenient to say the least. I have accessed your information and a social media representative will be reaching out to you soon to assist in having your unit repaired quickly and discuss your non-covered costs.

This is a follow up for a review I wrote on June 10th. I receive same response all bad reviews receive to notify their email address and immediately did so the same day (July 10). It is now July 14 and I still have not had any contact with AHS or a Company to fix my AC. So 12 days after submitting my request for a broken AC in one of the hottest months of the year I continue to be ignored.

Waited on hold for a total of 3+ hours (counting the time I had to call back after being disconnected). Tried to get an authorization to set up my own appointment for an AC technician since it is 100+ degrees outside and we have a 3-year old at home. The agent said that wasn't possible because they have 48 hours to start work....not including weekends. So I was expected to wait until Monday (this was on a Wednesday) to have my AC looked at, when we are under a heat advisory! Tell that to a toddler that is crying because he is hot!!!! The lack of service from this company has been amplified in the last 6 months. We are definitely looking for another warranty company and AHS will be... Read More

I would never recommend this company to anyone. This was purchased by the seller of our new home, in part because they are supposed to cover geo thermal systems. A part on our system went bad, & they will not cover it. We had issues with lighting. We still had to pay the electrician $75 to come out. The electrician then had to "argue with" (their words) the warranty issues in order to fix the lighting issues. This is a very pricey warranty. They are making money off both the seller & purchaser & offering nothing in return. I would describe their practice as fraudulent.
