Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

American Home Shield is HORRIBLE. 3 months later........we still don't have our appliance fixed and now they're giving us a hard time about replacing it. They hire contractors that never return phone calls, never show up for their appointments, don't call, won't return calls and won't respond to their emails. They allow any Joe Schmoe company into their database and then don't get rid of them despite multiple complaints. They also don't live up to their promises. If your appliance breaks down completely........good luck in getting it replaced by them. They will fight you so hard that you want to give up. But don't!!!! Fight this company.......hold them accountable!!

I was informed on ways to cut my payments down by dropping a few things by being asked a few simple questions like...do you use your landline? Do you use your trash compactor? He was very helpful and polite.we were changing the policy from the one the previous owners had to ours so this was good.

The communication issues with this company are beyond terrible. They are extremely difficult to reach. The hold times can extend hours and hours. I have been with them for years and this continues to be the same problem. The product is a good idea, but dealing with them is just not worth the stress. I would not recommend them to anyone. Surely, there must be a better company that offers this product. If you don't need to deal with them directly, the process usually works quite well. As we speak I have been on hold for 46 minutes listening to the same "We are currently experiencing higher than expected call volume. . . ." I think they must be experiencing the same call volume... My hot water heater broke. I was 100% pleased with everything from beginning to end. AHS staff were fantastic. The contractor was professional. The replacement prompt and all was covered but the co-pay (deductible).

I am very disappointed with the service I received regarding my refrigerator. I noticed problems with my refrigerator defrosting and freezing back on last Sunday and stayed on hold for approximately 3-hours before I could reach a representative to submit a claim. The technician came out three times and couldn't diagnose the problem because each time he came, the refrigerator was on. Today, one week later, my refrigerator isn't cooling at all and have had to throw away all of my grocery. I have called on a daily basis without any success with finding a competent company to make the repair. I expressed that I had a chronic medical condition and they didn't even care. Now I'm having to... Read More

They charge u a 75$ service fee just to come to your house and say they won't cover your leaking tub, broken microwave, or anything else. What's the point of paying for a warranty that only seems to take more of your money when u have a problem. Your better off saving your own money and not paying for a home warranty. This sadly seems to be becoming the norm as far as home warranties go.

The absolutely worse. I beg of you, for the sake of your sanity, PLEASE do not get American Home Shield. I am 8 1/2 months pregnant, in Texas, in 95 degree weather and it has been THREE WEEKS without an air conditioner. American Home Shield has gone back and forth on whether they wanted to repair our AC unit or buy us a new one. Because of this it has set us back THREE WEEKS. We finally got the part in today and guess what... IT'S BROKEN and will take another 6-10 days to get another one. Called and talked to customer service rep, Candace, who proceeded to tell me if I didn't take a more 'professional' tone she would hang up on me. We are now proceeding to pay out of pocket...
