Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

It was very comforting to have this support, built-in - we were well taken care of, with an issue I couldn't have solved myself. we have high expectations, and they were all met or exceeded

We had a person company come and fix our water dispenser and dryer on one occasion. The thing I liked about the contractors that AHS partner's with are that they are all professional and teach you something about your product regarding maintenance. This particular contractor had been over before and always makes it look so simple and they were so patient!

My double oven was no longer working properly, submitted maintenance request online and had my service complete with a few days. The repairman was very knowledgeable and resulted in need for a replacement. AHS was very quick to email my options and within a couple of weeks I had chosen and had installed a new double oven. Very pleased with the quick service.

They have always been in contact early on and always on time. fixed any of the items, to satisfaction. The contractors have always been professional. Thank you American Home Shield. I highly recommend your program.

I recommend that American Home Shield do a better screening of their contractors for availability and busyness. on my last job request I had to deal with very busy contractors who I constantly needed to call for update on parts and job availability.

AHS costs more than it provides. We had a bad experience last year but I was willing to give them a 2nd chance. This year our HVAC compressor went out amidst 95 degree temperatures. My home is 90 degrees every day with fans going. I called AHS, their affiliate technician took 3 days to come out and assess the problem, despite my request for expediency. The technician confirmed the broken compressor and said someone would be in touch within 24 hours regarding our options. I called a company of our own choosing for a 2nd opinion and was told the cost to fix the compressor would be $2000. 4 DAYS later I finally called AHS again and was told the affiliate company had ordered our parts... Most of the contractors we have had through American Home Shield have been prompt, professional and fixed whatever was needed. They cleaned up behind themselves, and were minimally invasive when they had to work on something inside. I'm pleased with the service AHS has provided.
