Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I've had this company's coverage for about 20 years. It's gotten ridiculously bad in the last 2-3 years. We had an electrical problem 2 weeks ago--called to get service & was told that someone would call back within 24 BUSINESS HOURS! That's three days, not counting weekends and holidays! We were called within those three days, but they couldn't fit us in their schedule until this Friday (17 days after our call for an electrical outage in 1/3 of our house!). Then the next week, our water heater went out. We got called by a local plumber that told us to bypass the safety feature (NO KIDDING!) to get it working again. Another plumber called us on Thursday (before Labor Day Weekend) and they... Read More

I am not making this up. I have been without AC since June 16th when I called American Home Shield to report it. Today is September 7th and they have not yet fixed it and I can't get a follow-up. Yet, they expect me to pay them every month. Almost 3 months of no AC and nothing. I have been put on hold, lied too, stood up, harassed, and ignored. Does anyone know how I can contact the media to report this? I really want to talk to someone about this situation. I guarantee you if I shared this story no one would believe what they have put my family and I through this summer.

I was told I could cancel within 30 days after I review their documents. I canceled by sending 2 emails and by phone. To date no response received. Purchased 06/28/2016. Canceled 07/21/2016 via email, follow-up email on 07/25/2016 which resulted in a phone call from the original sales person: Craig Powell America's First Choice Home Club Personal Account Representative 866.242.0629 Ext 8707 678.389.8707 (direct line) 1337 Canton Rd. Suite B Marietta, GA 30066 craig@afchomeclub.com During this phone conversation was told I should try it and could cancel at any time if after trying it I still don't like it. I confirmed I wanted to cancel. I was then told that since it had been after 14... Read More

Contractor sent was very knowledgeable and arrived in time frame advised. Explained what was wrong, what needed to be done and asked if I had any questions. After finished showed me what was done and the bad parts that were replaced. Very professional. Would highly recommend.

The plumbing company that came out were professional and on time. The found the leak and recommended a company that could dry the area. They were knowledgeable about what AHS would repair.

This is the worst Home Warranty Company ever! I was with them since 2010 and the initial service fee was $50. Then it went up to $60 and finally $75, which means the service fee changes every year! In 2012 I started having issues with my AC leaking Freon. Every time I would call, I'm always on hold for approximately 30-45 min and when I do reach a representative they always send the worst contractor over for a temporary fix. After 3 years of my AC still leaking Freon, instead of them replacing it or providing a permanent fix, they told me that I have to pay extra for the Freon and replacing it was not covered by the warranty because of it's issue. I was livid!!! I canceled my service and... Read More

Even though it took several attempts to figure out and resolve the problem, it was handled very well by the techs that were dispatched. Some problems are not an in and out fix. Mine was a unique one that took longer than originally anticipated. The fellas had a great professionalism about them as well as a sense of humor.

Whenever, I have called for, service the response has been very good. I am given information about the time line to expect a response for my repair and a telephone number of where to call. This has worked for me

My AC went out nine days ago over the weekend and it is still not fixed. I requested service from American Home Shield, my home warranty company, on Monday to report the problem. An AC company they assigned came out on Tuesday. The AC repairman said I needed a new capacitor. That same afternoon the AHS called and said they approved the repair and would order the part. Wednesday nothing happened. On Thursday I called the AC company and asked for an update. They returned my call and said they had waited on hold for 45 minutes to talk to the home warranty company to get a pick up number only to learn that there had been a mix up and the part had never been ordered by AHS. So Friday... Read More

The serviceman who responded to our call for repair was quick to make appointment to assess the damage, to make the decision on what needed to be done, ordered part and returned to do the repair as soon as part arrived.
