Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We signed up with them one year ago in August. The first time we had to call for service they were prompt about setting up an appointment. However the service provider was terribly incompetent and actually diagnosed a problem to be much more serious and expensive than warranted. We wound up finding our own provider, paid out of pocket, at a much lower rate. Next time we needed service we had to wait over 45 minutes to get a person on the telephone and once again provider was incompetent. I attempted to call up to report problems and still could not get a human being on telephone. The only time they currently answer calls promptly is when you are a new customer.

I consider their practices criminal and customer service no existant 26 days ago I called in a service request with American Home Shield because my AC was out,. The technician on site recommended to replace the 19 year old heat pump because both the compressor and fan motor are broken. AHS now claims it is a good repair and will not replace the unit even though 50plus% of the unit are broken. On top to repair they want me to pay $400 because the freeon of this old unit is so expensive. If they replace the unit I would not have to pay for any freeon. I have been paying for this warrantee to get equipment replaced when it is broken. A 19 year old heat pump is way past its time and need to... Read More

Telephone hold times are from 30 minutes to an hour. After an hour you are disconnected and have to call again. AHS is the only company that charges you for the replacement A/C coolant when A/C repairs are done. Very poor customer service

6/25/16 A/C stopped cooling and was reported to AHS. 6/27/16 contractor called to set up appt for 6/29/16. 6/29/16 Had my father meet the contractor. We told him that the coil keeps freezing up which causes the unit to stop cooling. We had been in the attic with a hair dryer all weekend trying to make it bearable so we knew what was wrong but not how to fix it. He checked the lines and unit and said there were no issues. No issues....really? It is 89 degrees in the house and there are no issues? The unit had been off and thawed so when he turned it on, it immediately started to cool so I am sure he thought it was working. We told him it would freeze and he said there were no leaks etc.... Another great service call. The provider was presentable and respectful of my property. Came in, listen to my concerns, assessed the problem and proceeded with the repair. It was a simple repair but a service call none the less.

My AC went out over the weekend. Waited on hold for 30 minutes. Was told in order to expedite my service request they needed to know what the "real feel" temperature was forecasted for the next few days (luckily I know how to find that but my mother wouldn't know) . Then rep says someone will be contacting us maybe Monday or Tuesday. Meanwhile, it's 91 degrees my home and the next few days are supposed to be "real feel" 105+. Since AHS no longer offers preventative maintenence plans (and ended the one I had with them with no notice whatsoever and then tried to charge me for it), I called Central Carolina (highly recommend) who I have an agreement with and they came out same day and... I requested service through American Home Shield online. I was notified by email, who the service company would be and that they would call me to set an appointment. A.R.M. Plumbing called me promptly and made an appointment to come to my house when it was convenient for me. A.R.M. came out and fixed the problem quickly. I have had no problems since. I would recommend American Home Shield to anyone who owns and maintains a home. I have peace of mind knowing that a serviceman is just a call away, and it won't cost me an ARM and a leg. lol

Time window is a little broad. However, service provider gave me a call to give me a 30 minute notice of his arrival. Was greeted by both technicians and they were very nice. Did not take them long to figure out the problem. They got my AC working again :).

I do not understand how American Home Shield can deny a claim because of their internal rules. We choose American Home Shield based upon their 4 star rating. I left my job of 25 years because of health issues. I have had 5 surgeries in the past 6 months. In 2015 when my job ended we knew we were on a fixed income. My husband has COPD and emphziema We had a AHS home warranty in place and decided to keep it as we knew with my health we were not going to have any extra money if we needed a repair. My hospital bill from May 2016 was $344.000.00. We are both in our 60’s On May 23, 2016 we called in 2 claims. 1. A water leak (I will get to that one) The 2nd, my husband in the spring...
