Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We live in Phoenix, AZ and our AC went out in May. It is almost mid July and our unit is still not working. When I called to place the work order with their customer service back in May, the girl that took my call was completely incompetent and failed to answer my questions. During a 30 minute call, I spent about 25 of those minutes on hold for her to come back with with a one or two word response to my questions. She finally dispatched All Star Refrigerant to my home. The contractor with this company called me to set up an appointment for the following day but then did not show up. When he finally arrived he indicated that my unit needed refrigerant and charged me $350 with the impression... Read More

I had a water leak on the water line to the ice maker. When the line was installed they did now show me where the shut off was. When they came out they had to look for it. When they found it, they changed it so it is now right behind the refrigerator. It is easy to get to.

Currently having issues with our heat pump. Upon contacting AHS the contractor called and was at my house that afternoon. Although he was unable to fix the issue, currently working on getting item replaced. AHS has responded very professionally and quickly in assisting me.

I was just on hold the first time I called today on 7/9/16 for over 35 minutes( recording said it would be 10 minutes). After receiving a service # for my appliances I called Sears at the 800 # provided to confirm appointment ASAP, who informed me, (she was very difficult to understand), that they didn't service Hot Point(GE appliances) one appliance was GE the other Hot Point. My understanding they are the same company. So I called back to AHS at 11:57AM (recording said wait would be over 10 minute) and finally Marcus answered, I kid you not at 12:54 PM ,which was 3 minutes short of an hour hold. I rarely call for service which I have had for a very long time on my house, but question... Read More

I have been an AHS customer for over 4 years, paying over $100 per month for home warranty (my house is new and greater than 5000 square ft). We have close to none service claims ( can't remember the last time we called for service). This year my pool servicing company identified a couple of issues. I placed a service request online on AHS website. A pool service company (Platinum Contractors) called that is NOT local to my house and does not service my area on Fridays. They are asking somebody to available essentially the entire day so that come whenever they like during the day. They gave me one appointment option that was unacceptable to me and next appointment was weeks away. I was... Read More

Getting someone to answer the phone and to talk to someone in person is ridiculous. The normal time waiting to speaking to CS is 30+ min. Oh wait, once you get to 30 min you get hung up on. I was on hold writing this review. Hung up on at 30 min.

I have American Home shield for several years and never actually used its services until July 2016. I had a slab leak and called AHS on the telephone number provided. Its was extremely frustrating because no one never answered even after an hour of waiting on hold. To make things worse, the plumbing company they assigned to contact me was not available at all until 3 days later. This is after I went to their website and placed a service request. And after calling AHS and telling them that the situation was an emergency, they promised me that a plumber will call me that evening or call me the next day. So, no one called me that evening but got a call from AHS the next day stating... Read More

The latest service request that we made from American Home Shield pertained to problems with our air conditioning unit that a technician had discovered during a previous, unrelated service call (which American Home Shield also arranged) due to a problem with our furnace. Had this additional problem not been pointed out, we would not have known about it until the warm-weather months, when we would have needed the air conditioning, but then not had it at our immediate disposal. The technician made the additional repair to the air-conditioning unit in one visit, and at a substantial savings (because of the home warranty) over what the repair would have cost otherwise.

I'm an unemployable disabled Army veteran with two small dogs. I've had AHS since 2012 and have had an issue with my air conditioner two years in a row - 2015 and 2016. The central air unit is located in a new condo built in 2007 never lived in until 2012. I have paid my service fee and for the 2nd year have been cooking in an overheated unit with temps reaching over 91 degrees without the benefit of air on the top floor of 1,674 sq ft unit. This year since June 10 to the present date July 7, 2016, waiting for a contractor to order and modify a piece to the present unit because the item in need of replacement is no longer made. Still patiently waiting for heat relieve in Virginia! Taking... Read More
