Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Their website and costumer service is a joke: I called to file a complaint and they said they give me p.o. box to send it to, also you can't cancel online. The contractors they send give you minimum effort or just waste your time and money: I have wasted two months waiting for my dryer contract to figure out and fix my dryer.

AHS used to have good customer service when I first signed with them 13 years ago, however, they have recently declined DRAMATICALLY in this space. My most recent experience involved them sending out AAA U Pay Less who was a mom and pop shop swamped and couldn't come out to home for 3 days. When they finally did arrive the "tech" took one look at the wash machine and said he couldn't fix it. It took him 4 days to write the report to AHS who would do nothing until they received his report. Then they got Sears involved. I had to wait three more days until Sears could arrive to diagnose it. They didn't have the part and had to order (another week). The Sears tech told me to call AHS once the... Read More

We have been associated with AHS for the past eight years. Four of those years we rented the house and felt that AHS provided us with a program to protect our home. Every time that we called AHS we received prompt efficient service that was of a high quality. Our recommendation is that all home owners should have the services of AHS!

One of those companies that are quick answering the phone whenever it is for charging you money, but painstakingly slow and unefficient when it comes to cancelling the contract with them and requesting them to stop billing you. They don't use email confirmations and everything has to be done over the phone with excruciatingly long waiting times; it's the year 2016 for crying out loud!! In short: yet another large corporation that uses its size to take advantage of its customers. So sad. My advice: stay way from them.

My last American Home Shield visit was just like the previous visits. Timely, professional and delightful. The service personnel that have come to my home always show proof of their visit before entering my home. American Home Shield is awesome.

I was very impressed with the conractor who fixed my ice maker. Well dressed, well spoken when explaining the situation, prompt and on-time, and he fixed the problem when he returned with parts. I would definitely use them again and recommend an American Home Shield warranty to any homeowner.

We have used AHS for over 5 years now with no complains at all and have recommended AHS to a number of people; and many of them have signed up and so far satisfied with their services. However, I don't exactly know what to think of it right now. Today, me and my family have completed exactly 13 days with no AC under very harsh heat conditions (94% humidity) here in the midwest (West Chester Oh). what started as a simple part to be ordered, it is now a wait and see when we will have AC back. it took 5 days for the part to get to the contractor, then 2 days for the contractor to give us an appointment but surprise: the part was the wrong one. the contractor is blaming AHS and AHS is blaming... Don't use American Home Shield if you live in northeastern Kentucky in the tri- state area. I've had two home warranties with American Home Shield. The first was in Lexington, KY. In Lexington, the contractor they sent did a great job. Due to a job transfer we ended up in a much smaller town in northeastern Kentucky. Having experienced great service in Lexington, we chose to use American Home Shield again. The results were horrible. The plumbers they sent to our home were awful...unprofessional, rude and incompetent. When I had to request a second service call, I tried to get AHS to send a different plumber. They didn't have anyone else to send. We also needed electrical... Read More

We have been using American home shield for 4 years and had no problems up to now. During the peak heat of July in Arizona we had a problem with our condenser. AHS sent a repairman from Sonic mechanical who was unable to complete the repair that day and who then scheduled a follow up 2 days later. A different person showed up who spoke very poor english and spent a great deal of time on the repair. He also told us he was unable to complete the repair as we needed a new compressor. Why this was not determined on the first visit I don't know. He said that the part would be ordered the following monday. Over 5 days went by without a status update. When I called the repair service a woman... Read More

For the past few years, my AC unit has been a problem during the summer months. AHS has been coming out several times during the summer and the unit will work a few months then stop. The unit is very old and need replacing but they keep sending a provider out to fix or patch it up and within a few months the same thing is happening again. The worst part about this is that when I finally reach someone on the phone to report need of service, the provider, usually the same one can't schedule an appointment until 4 to 5 days later. I live in Florida and in the summer the heat is over 100 degrees. This is too long to be without an air conditioner. I feel that the provider they use should... Read More
