Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I gave them one star for at least sending people to fix when you finally reach them. It's impossible to talk to anyone on the phone. Waits are over an hour if they don't hang up while you wait. Sometimes they'll offer to call you back but never do. When absolutely required they will exchange an item but for the cheapest type which has "similar" to what you had. On top of that they will take your old equipment which in my case were expensive, brand names and I wouldn't be surprise if the resale them at a high price. They don't care sending over and over repair people to fix the cheap part they replace. If you call within a short time you don't have to pay for them to comeback but if... Read More

Horrible experience. I am a long time customer and their service and coverage is nothing like it used to be. Hold times to reach an agent on the phone are easily over an hour or more. Offshore call center agents totally useless so pray you get connected to someone stateside. My issue was an A/C problem... first company they sent to conduct the repair was out at my home FIVE times and problem was not resolved. Second company dispatched came up with a solution that AHS refuses to pay for despite the reason for the denial not listed in the contract. As soon as my contract is up I am finding another home warrant company ASAP! NEVER AGAIN!!!

I am very disappointed in AHS. Every time we have tried to make a claim it has been refused. I would not recommend this company at all. A waste of my money and time. The last service call, had to do with a water heater that broke. It was over the holiday weekend with guests expected. My husband made a minor repair to get us through the holiday and was honest with the emergency rep about the repair. They said it would not be a problem. It was obvious that the water heater was broken and showed signs of leaking. After a service man came out to to look at the repair and take pictures, AHS still refused to approve the fix because a minor temporary fix had been made. Terrible customer... Read More

My experience was horrible!! I had several items repaired and it never covered the repair with just a $75 dollar fee. I always owed way more than if I had it repaired myself. I cancelled my policy and had paid for a full month and they said I owed them an administration fee for cancelling which was more than the months premium. I was always on hold for greater than 45 minutes and customer service was terrible. I will never use AHS again!! Worst company ever!!

After paying top price including all amenities for our house we woke up one morning to no heat. AT 7am AHS was contacted via email. No response. A couple hours later I called AHS, was put on hold and told that the contractor would be contacting me. Still no return phone calls. I called AHS for the 2nd time and was hung up on and no return call (they confirmed my number and NO, I was not nasty at all). I called again and after being on hold for more than 10 minutes I was told the contractor would be out tomorrow. Mind you, this was winter time, very cold temps, a sick family who was just at urgent care ....and NO heat. AHS was informed about this situation. She said she would find... Read More

We requested service for a bursted water pipe in our kitchen in an inside wall Representative over the phone gathered all necessary information and proceeded to collect a $125 service fee which I thought was strange because in my past experience with other home warranty companies that was not collected until the contractor showed up. Plumber was scheduled 2 days later which was a Friday at 1pm. Plumber calls us asking if he can come at 8am instead. Unfortunately we could not change time due to work schedule. Plumber shows up and states that it is a non covered service. After reading my contract I do not understand why this was not covered being that it was an interior wall and we had... Read More

I have had AHS for about 12 years and the service, coverages and contractors have declined during the past 2 years. They changed my coverages without even notification, I have been on line waiting to check on a request for at least 30 minutes and received no answer. This is not service.

After giving a great review in November I have had nothing but problems! Been with them for years and now they keep sending me a late trade service fee 3 times. On hold for a very long time as I right this to try and clear it up again. Each time I get someone on the phone it is obvious to them it was an error and they would correct it. Still, once again, here I Am on hold so they can try to fix it again! I’m just going to pay the $109 so it stops hitting my credit report and quit American Home shield.
