Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Worse company ever. Don’t waste your money or time. Have a question, be prepared to wait a hour on the phone and if they can’t answer they just hang up. They say they will call you back but they don’t. The lie. I have never had such bad service from any company.

I have had American Shield for a couple of years and before they did good. Lately it has been one excuse after another regarding the coverage. I am changing companies. I have recommended this company to a few of my neighbors and I will pass the information to them. I will rate them below 0 for sure.

It’s Horrible! I am writing this while waiting on the line for representative. My home washer is broken and it’s been more than 3 weeks, contractor came in, diagnosed it, then nothing... absolutely nothing. I had to call again and again to check the status and what’s the next step. And every time I call there is wait of 1+ hour. I don’t know how they are Number 1 service provider, in my opinion it’s pathetic service and experience I have ever had.

Horrible service. Called in Nov 2018 for a broken dishwasher. The contractor sent out did not do anything the first day. Then came back two weeks later to again order a useless part and admitted he did not know anything about this dishwasher. Then he ordered a computer board for it. Weeks go by and I called the company and they said they called us if we wanted the money for the part. We never received this call. Thus the part was not ordered. Then two months later we get a call saying this part will not be here for another two months. This company and contractor are a sham and are not fixing anything. Save your money because you will end up calling your own contractor.

If repair is not possible and replacement becomes necessary, it takes a ridiculously long time to complete the replacement. Still waiting on replacement range over 30 days!

We have 4 homes covered under AHS and each one with less that a year has be so bad it has caused severe stress, washing machine broke, tech came out had to order part took a month he came to fix it and something else broke while he tried to put on part he brought, tech said he though another part may be the problem and it might even be another part, well he was told to bring both parts on the next appointment, so AHS called a few days later and paid the claim to replace the washer. the second problem was also washer at a different family member home, same problem with getting part, tech came to put on part then broke the door, door was ordered then washer starting leaking, six weeks total... Terrible experience using this company for my hot water tank. They used a plumbing company that was on vacation so I was unable to speak with anyone between the Saturday when I place the call for service and they did not come and check until Thursday. Being without hot water in December was not important to AHS. They take money out monthly and I never was late for a payment. But when it comes to AHS service it is poor, unreasonable time to fix the problem and does not get thing in your home fixed 24 hours 7 days a week. My recommendation to everyone DON'T USE THIS COMPANY.

I really at this point do not like this company, after all of the 12 years that I have been dealing with this company I never experience a bad deal like this. My dryer went out on me because it was not heating up and the people that they sent out the first time the guy messed up my dryer where the drum was loose and tearing up my clothes. I asked American home Shield to seen someone else because the guy that came out the first time messed up my dryer, it took them 4 weeks to decide on whether they should seen someone else or not. Finally after the 4th week they sent someone else out to get a second opinion and they stated that it will take 5 to 7 business days to fix my dryer, well it took... Read More

Our house was purchased a year ago, including an American Home Shield policy. Within this year, there have been four different companies, at four different times, to prepare the 20 year old heat pump. Putting "bandaids" on something that needs "surgery". All the companies agreed that a new unit would be the better option - except American Home Shield. So when the commercial suggests "replacement" - that doesn't happen. Now that the compressor has broken and the R22 freon bill to us would be over $1200, we are getting a new unit. The only compensation was to be for the compressor. Now they can't seem to find that "recorded conversation" indicating their offer. Also, waiting hours... Read More

I had this service for a few years and had always had great service from them. One year in the middle of the 95 plus degree heatwave summer, my AC unit went out. I called them and it took 17 days for them to get the part for my unit. Then, it was the wrong part! I had to wait more time. I called a local HVAC guy and he was out the SAME DAY and fixed me right up. I had to buy a new unit but I was no longer in misery. The warranty company did not seem to care one bit that I had to do this because they couldn't. So when they say it may take up to 30 days to get your appliance fixed, they certainly did not lie! Unacceptable for this type emergency. I cancelled my service and they... Read More
