Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Total insurance scam! AHS should be investigated and put out of business. I paid $813 for my policy and they refused to pay for my ice maker even though my paperwork clearly states that it is covered. Had to pay a contractor $80 to diagnose problem, then two weeks later AHS called to say they wouldn't cover it.

In my experience, the WORST company EVER! So, two months ago, oven not heating, sent a guy, he yelled at me in front of my daughter, and then, my husband! The oven never did get fixed. The dryer broke, they were going to send same company, I said HELL NO, so they sent a different company. The guy BLEW UP our dryer and our electric circuit. Blamed it on our electricity. SO, they sent an electrician, he fixed it. It blew again, the electrician came again, fixed it, looked and said the dryer is melted inside and that it is burned up and the electric is not the problem and that the dryer has a short in it. I called the owner back and told him the guy he sent ruined the dryer and blew up... Read More

The worse company, never answers the phone, placing on hold for hours. No one talks to you when you have a. Problem with appliances. Very good in getting the money.

HVAC system has not worked in my rental property for months now. We had a contractor show up and found a leak. He suggested that we either buy a brand new unit that they would install ($5,000 - $8,000) or inject coolant for $700.00. We chose to go with a cheaper option. My tenant complained again that it was not cooling. The same offer was made again. I asked the contractor why the A/C will not be replaced. He said AHS will not allow it. They want us to fix it. Well, it is not getting fixed. Each time you call AHS, you sit on the phone for hours. They never have the staff to take care of their customers. I think it is time for them to fold.

As the Realtor for a first time buyer, I purchased an AHS warranty for my clients. Found out the HVAC vendor left something to be desired. Quoted $110 per pound for air conditioning coolant for a summer repair. AHS said they only cover $10 per pound. I called around locally and got quotes ranging from $35 to $70 per pound, depending on type of coolant. Needless to say, nobody was very happy. My client blew up and took it out on everyone. So much for my effort to help out and leave a good impression.

I have a very bad review in the works for this company. I requested service for a leaking water heater about three weeks ago. A contractor came, took a quick look, a photo of the label, and said it was an internal leak. He left explaining that AHS would contact me with a quote. When AHS did, they told me the service would be $500 or so. I told them that was outrageous. They explained to me there were some “modifications” that were needed, but the agent could not explain what they were. I requested a written quote and the very, very obnoxious woman on the phone (whose name I, unfortunately, cannot remember) said she could only give it verbally to me. I refused the service. A couple of... Read More

Like other home warranty companies these guys are scam artists. I had a simple leak from my washer and dryer and they denied into the exhaust vent. After 7 phone calls and being on hold for six hours (I am not kidding, six hours), they denied our request even though in the contract it says they fix duck work and washer and dryers (including duct work). The people I called were rude and unhelpful. If I were you, I would run away from this company. They are awful!!!!!!

American Home Shield was a warranty company that I once that was a great company. However, I need correspondence for what they made a mistake and they refuse to honor my request even though they caused the error. I am canceling my account. Get a warranty through your utility company for AHS. Not what it's cracked up to be.

Took 34 days for them to fix my broken A/C during the middle of the summer! Totally unacceptable!
