Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. They use second rate vendors. One of the HVAC vendors (Air Designs) they sent to our home turned the gas off without telling us. Here is what happened. FIRST - Air Designs came unprepared for the scheduled appointment. They DID NOT have equipment to test gas furnace. I wasted 4 hours of my Saturday waiting for them. SECOND - They did not follow up after coming unprepared. I had to call AHS and they still did not call to schedule appointment. I ended up having to call them to reschedule. Even though they had already received my $100 deductible. THIRD - They left without telling me that they disconnected the gas. I only found out it was disconnected when my... Read More

They suck! Don’t waste your money! I’ve had them for a few years and I’m now canceling my policy. You’ll spend ay LEAST 30 minutes on hold then the person you talk to can’t answer any of your questions. I’ve had an outstanding repair on my toilet for 2 months.

Sad to say I have used the company for over 10 years and have recently become dissatisfied with their service. they have become extremely hard to get a hold of, apparently send their calls overseas and the associates are extremely hard to understand due to heavy accents, assign contractors that will not accept the job, and most recently told me to choose someone to repair my plumbing, then refused to reimburse me. (The company they assigned refused to come to property stating "we will not be doing any repairs for AHS, we are too busy. ) I did as I was told and submitted the receipts six weeks ago. today I received a letter stating they would not reimburse me for the repairs. There excuse... Read More

Purchased the most complete coverage plan offered 8 or so years ago and have only filed 2 claims during this time. Called 6 months ago because my garage door opener failed. The company they sent said the spring was broken and that it was not covered. Only the motor is covered so I had to pay out of pocket which amounted to over $300.00. Now, 4 months later my garage door opener would not open or close properly and immediately bent the top panel on the door. Called American Home Shield, asked that they not send the company that came before. They sent a different company who quickly said the cable had come unwound. They rewound both of them but the top panel had been bent and the openers... Read More

I am pretty sure they are feeding you only their most positive reviews. This company does not care about anything but their metrics. They are apparently at the mercy of their contractors who evidently only care about shaking down their (American Home Shield) customers. I have been without A/C now for going on two weeks, now they are just ignoring me. Buyer Beware!

Just terrible. For example, today I was on the phone for over 3.5 hours, talked to 3 representatives and was put on hold to 45 minutes and eventually they hung up on. The internet-based account did not work properly. So I could not enter the service request from my AHS account.

I had a really bad experience with AHS. The same plumbers and the owner of the company could not make a simple toilet repair. Four trips to my house were made and they kept telling me there was nothing wrong with a toilet had kept making loud flushing noises. The owner told me I was imaging the noise and I should record it because the toilet was fine. AMS would not dispatch another plumber, saying that the one that had made the four service calls was the only one assigned to my area. In desperation, I called a local plumbing company and they replaced the "flapper" and my problem was solved. Then when I tried to cancel my contract, I was told by customer service reps that they... You file a claim explaining in detail what your claim is and they send out repair person charge 100 and say no warranty knowing up front it wouldn’t be covered. 100 ripped off by them and then threaten me for writing negative reviews
