Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We have been on hold with AHS with the status of our air conditioner repairs. Every time we call its more than an hour of waiting on hold. No one answers and we eventually give up. The repair team and AHS does not respond efficiently. AHS has the worst repair status notification system. We have used them since 2009.. time to find a new warranty program. AHS just lost a loyal customer-

My husband and I filed a claim to repair our air conditioner and was faced with many obstacles. AHS dispatched a repairman that had no website and the only internet presence were bad Yelp reviews. The repairman was rude and said AHS will not cover the part for the repair (the motor) due to the intake vents being too small. This was a surprise to my husband and I because our home was newer construction and surely built to code. After many calls to AHS, a second repairman was dispatched. He said the motor was covered as there is no evidence the intake vents were improper. My husband and I will not renew our policy after this experience. We do not feel AHS contracts reputable... Been trying to get my central heat an air unit fixed for 3 weeks now. American Home Shield set up an appointment for their contractor to come out to my home then canceled it without notice to me. We waited for the company to come out on the appointment date and time they never did mind you that i had already waited 2 weeks for the contractor to come out due to them being overbooked. When I called American Home Shield to inquire what happened it took 2 call and 2 1/2 hours to get another appointment set up for a later date. Every time I call I know it will take a minimum of an hour waiting for a representative. When requesting a supervisor there is never one available. I have called... Read More

I got a home warranty from AHS when I bought this house, and I renewed it a few months ago. I have to say that I've been satisfied with them, overall. They do a good job coordinating the scheduling with us and the companies doing the repairs. They've been cooperative. I've had one particularly complex problem that they've stuck with me to help, and the people on the phone have been very empathetic with their suggestions and their help. The only complaint that you may want to consider is that they have extremely long wait times on the phone. It's not unusual for me to be on hold for 50 minutes or more, even if I call at 8:30 like today.

You guys get a lot of bad reviews. I was researching home warranties and at this point I don't have any issues but as I get close to retirement the money to replace stuff may be hard. After reading all this, I believe I'll find a different company.

One of the worst customer service experiences I have ever had. Does not understand what a refrigerator that breaks 4x needs to be replaced and takes over a week to get a contractor out. Doesn't take responsibility for their mistakes and passes the buck for every problem they have.

follow up on my previous comments from approx. 2 hrs ago. I have been on the phone with AHS for 74+ min and I was just advised the ac unit I have, which is a Carrier has now been changed to a Lenox and I have no say in the matter. I will have a Lenox or the file will be closed. This is not the way to treat customers. If I had been told originally the ac would be replaced with a similar unit and not the same unit this would not be a problem but to give me a different unit to cover up someone not ordering.....

6/1/17 called ahs as had problem with ac blowing hot air. 6/6/17 ac company came out and added Freon with a copay and advised the unit was old and this could be a temp fix. 6/20 called ahs to report repair did not work and to request service. 6/21 ac company called to set up appoint but could not come out til 6/29 called ahs and asked for another company that could come out earlier due to the extreme heat in AZ, 6/23 new ac repair company came out and advised unit needed to be replaced. AHS did agree to replace the unit and thank-you but this is now 7/6/17 and I still do not have any air conditioning. .According to ahs the unit was ordered 6/23 and available 6/26. The lack of concern on your end - American Home Shield - has been very difficult, has lasted now 3 weeks, and is causing me to question why we have you as our appliance insurance company due to the extremely poor customer service I am receiving. In addition, the weather that was happening at that time was extreme heat, and since we are in the middle of summer, and the issue has NOT been resolved, we are still dealing with the heat. About 3 weeks ago on 06/19/2017, I called you - American Home Shield - to have someone come out to my home to take a look at my AC unit. When I called, I was on hold for over an hour, so I decided to hang up and request service online. When I requested... Read More

Today I cancelled this warranty having paying them for several years a monthly premium; in 2016, I called them about my heater and it took 3 weeks to get the right contractor to fix it. In this case the contractor(s) were the issue. Then in June 2017, my AC had issues, they sent the same contractor out to look at it 4 days later (6/22) who put Freon and didn't fix the leak but billed me $80 and then refused to come back out to service me. AHS tried to find another contractor but without success. I was displaced from my home for 4 days w/o reimbursement or anyone caring about it. Today, after hassling with AHS to get a contractor out to fix it and multiple calls to the contractor who... Read More
