Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

We had an ongoing HVAC problem for 3 summers in a row. The first summer, American Home Shield sent a contractor who came out several times and never found the problem. We paid the deductible the first time, but since the problem continued and we called within 60 days, we didn't have to pay again. The second summer, the same thing happened. This summer, we had to wait almost a week for someone to arrive, and when he came, all he did was pretend to clean the outside part of the HVAC system. We paid him the deductible, and he did nothing. He was only here for 10 minutes. I contacted AHS and was told we'd have to get back in the queue, and it would be another 4-5 business days before someone... Read More

We had an extremely hard time getting them to replace our broken air conditioner this month despite it being covered under our warranty. The a/c stopped working on May 30, 2016. We called to report it that night. Between that night and the day they finally replaced the unit almost a month later (June 25, 2016) I had to call them daily for updates. They sent out numerous contractors, most of whom recommended total replacement of the unit. They finally decided to authorize replacement after we called them daily. We basically had to hound them to get anything done. Days would go by between contractor visits and they never once reached out to keep us informed. If we didn't hound them, we'd... Read More

Recently my washing machine motor gave out. All American Appliance Repair responded to the service request with a couple of hours, and was at my house within 2 additional hours. The service tech had all necessary material to complete the repair, and the repair was completed within an hour. Start to finish it was about a 5 hour process. Awesome! And ~6 months later, the repaired washing machine is still going strong.

Very difficult to reach customer service by phone, three different times I waited on hold for over 30 minutes.

My roommate and I have had several problems with this company. First our oven and dryer were broken and home shield came out to figure out what the problem was and to order parts. As you may very well know there's a $100 service fee anytime they come out to just look at anything. Any further appointments I've made with them, the company has blown off completely. I've made several appointments for them to come fix our dryer and oven and when the date rolls around no one shows up and no one calls and then it's impossible to get a hold of anyone when I try to call. It took five months to get my oven and dryer fixed and that's only because I finally gave up on this company and paid someone... Read More

Had this company for over twenty years, the last five have been so bad I finally canceled it! The breaking point was when my washer broke and they tell me I overloaded it, I have been doing laundry for 40 years! The plumber tells me ,I am supposed to remove the face plate for the shower and clean any calicum from the values as normal maintence, who does that? They just don't want to do any work!

Worst company Ever! If you need to speak with them on phone, plan on waiting at least 1 hour. Not kidding. That music you hear on wait, will drive anyone nuts. I should know I am a psychotherapist. Their technicians, (Appliance Plus in NJ), are irresponsible, don't call you back and it took over a month to get my stove fixed. Completely unacceptable. Stay clear of this organization, plus their premiums are higher than their competitions.

I have had them for 10 years. However, their service within the past 3 years leaves much to be desired. You have to wait on hold, at least, 20 minutes before you can get anyone on the phone. The service providers are unprofessional. They either don't fix the problem the 1st time, don't return calls, or they make the problem worse. AHS does not provide an avenue to change providers if you're not satisfied. And I'm considering changing my home warranty service because the benefits no longer outweigh the costs.

This company is a sham. Should you have to hire you're own selected repair company because their contractor is subpar and tries to install used and possibly damaged parts you're cash out will be a faction of the actual costs. Pool - New bottom Pentair 4060 filter housing (contractor price) $ 298.18 Service install - Rhodes Pool and Spa 290.00 Total $ 588.18 FAHBP $ 149.00 cash out and non-negotiable ( Non-negotiable is their slogan ) My additional yearly cost for pool/spa equipment protection $180.00 Calling in is nothing but transfers to transfers and then the dropped called after 55mins. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! - SCAMMERS, CORRUPT,... Read More

I know American Home Shield is usually great but my recent experience has not been up to par. On Fri morn June 10th Five Star Energy inspected the ac unit because it wasn't cooling. But they told u AHS new policy required that they wait for AHS to call them to determine rather than Five Star being able to call AHS for approval Friday. That meant 3 days went by (Sat, Sun and Mon) in the heat until AHS finally approved the part to be ordered on Monday afternoon. It took until June 21 for Five Star to receive the part and then when they went to install it Wed June 22, it turned out to be COMPLETELY THE WRONG PART. AHS had ordered a scroll compressor instead of a hermatic. So after 2... Read More
